Selkirk based Oregon Timber Frame Limited has a unique and exciting Business Improvement Engineering opportunity for a graduate to assist us in developing and changing our culture to one where all departments continually foster business improvement in everything they do. This is a 12 month placement initially.

Project Description
At Oregon, we design, manufacture, supply and erect structural timber frames to the UK's leading house-builders/developers. We continually strive to be at the forefront of the timber frame industry and deliver sustainable operational excellence.
This is a key growth project for our business and you will be given the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and the value you can offer our business as we seek to embed a culture of continuous improvement throughout the company. In return, you will gain a wealth of business awareness across all aspects of our Company.
Overall, we are looking to invest in someone who demonstrates their potential for building a long term career within Oregon Timber Frame Limited. Whilst we are currently unable to guarantee a permanent role at the conclusion of the placement, every effort will be made to identify a suitable role.
Placement Objectives
- Review, measure and identify potential improvements in all business processes (improve efficiency, reduce costs and maximise profitability)
- Promote a ‘Continuous Improvement’ culture throughout the business
- Lead &/or facilitate ‘Lean Management’ projects
- Conduct ‘root cause analysis’ on our Exception Reports and identify robust and practical solutions to repeat quality issues
- Identify Research & Development projects (in conjunction with our Technical Director) to ensure we remain at the forefront of timber frame manufacturing industry
Role Description
Main Tasks:
- You will work in partnership with all areas of our company both internally and externally to ensure current processes are measured and analysed. Thereafter you will be expected to identify and implement improvements
- You must have a good understanding of continuous improvement philosophies which include understanding the principles, systems, methods, tools and standards
- You will also be responsible for measuring, analysing and recording data and present improvement opportunities to the Board for consideration. Therefore, strong presentation/communication skills are required
- You will be expected to learn all aspects of timber frame construction methods with the aim of providing additional technical support to the business
- Have good leadership skills and have experience of developing interpersonal relationships
- Maintain and exceed current levels of quality within the Company
Qualifications
HNC, HND or Degree in relevant discipline

- Extensive knowledge and experience of process driven and improvement methodologies
- Ability to demonstrate initiative, the desire to drive change and be motivated to exceed expectations
- Possess basic statistical knowledge and ability to apply this to product and process improvement projects
- Time management: Ability to plan work load and exceed deadlines
- People Management: Ability to communicate to varying levels of personnel
- Teamworking : Team player with a "can do" attitude
- Manage information: control databases and have a very proactive approach to information sources and information gathering
- Communicate effectively: verbally and through written words/reports
- Leadership: to educate all departments when implementing change through business improvement processes
KEY SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES
- Appreciation and understanding of business improvement methodologies
- Assist the Technical Director in any strategic initiative that will help in compliance to standards, implementing new systems, and creating solutions that will improve our practices
- Have an understanding of the commercial impact on Operational cost (ie cost –v- benefit principles)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Dedication to promote continuous improvements throughout the company
- Robust character with a strong drive and motivation to succeed
- Good knowledge and understanding of Word, Excel and any other computer package which you would require to communicate your report findings
- You must have a current driving licence and use of a personal car for work related usage
Desirable Skills
- Experience of the Construction Industry, specifically timber frame methods
- Possess a professionally recognised qualification in Engineering
