Placement summary

Based just 15 miles from Edinburgh City Centre, Glenrath Farms Ltd is a successful local business in the Peeblesshire area. We now have an excellent opportunity for a graduate with a background in either Environmental Management or Environmental Science. The project has a diverse range of scope from all environmental aspects of the food chain from our farms to fork. This is a 12 month placement and will be based at our new state of the art Glenrath Egg Products Facility.

Project Description

You will deploy your recently acquired skills and knowledge to review and upgrade our environmental management systems to add value to our products and where possible, identify savings by investigating both our inputs and waste streams. The role will require you to be dedicated and thorough in your approach and you will need to engage with all teams in the business and try and make a difference to the bottom line of the business. The project will also require investigation into new and novel products and processes that could be available from our current waste products.

We are fast moving with a variety of tasks with little staying still for long. The scope of the project covers many applications with scope to add value and margins to a tight bottom line.

Placement Objectives

This project is aimed at improving our current environmental performance. You will put into practice your knowledge and skills gained from an academic perspective into a variety of commercial applications, review and update current EMS processes and hopefully be able to identify savings and implement improvements where appropriate.

Role Description

Main Tasks:

  • Create and implement EM plans and systems to support company requirements in line with quality and health and safety procedures and to meet legal requirements and relevant standards
  • Monitor EM developments by external bodies, and in liaison with management team assess appropriateness to the company and make recommendations to senior management where appropriate
  • Investigate and identify  potential new markets from existing outputs
  • Establish and implement necessary communication strategy for the improvement and awareness of EM issues across all departments including training and engagement of personnel
  • Plan and manage weekly, monthly and longer term EM reports and activities in accordance with agreed budgets and timescales and within policies and standards
  • Act as representative for EM to liaise with auditors, regulatory bodies, customers and suppliers where appropriate
  • Supervise monitoring of health and safety and EM compliance, including services such as gas, electricity, etc
  • Monitor staff compliance with EM procedures and take appropriate action in liaison with the appropriate line manager
  • Engage with external bodies relating to R& D projects
  • Attend and participate in meetings and other events
  • Personally, comply with health and safety, environmental, security, and emergency systems, according to company policy and relevant law
  • Develop personal skills and capability through on-going training, as provided by the company or elsewhere subject to Company approval

Qualifications

HND or Degree in Environmental Management or Environmental Science would be ideal for the role.

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Can work under own initiative
  • Competent IT skills, in particular Word and Excel
  • Full driving licence is essential
