Placement summary
Barr Environmental is looking for a talented graduate to help us with a project which aims to strengthen our site capabilities. This is a 12 month placement will see you learning all aspects of the day-to-day functions of on-site, waste management and you will be supported and mentored by the Operations Manager. For the right candidate and following successful delivery of the project, a permanent role may be available at the end of the placement. The role will be based in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire.

Project Description
This is a key project for our growing business and we are keen to find the right person who will be able to add significant value during the placement and hopefully beyond. Reporting to the site Operations Manager, you will provide effective and professional support whilst developing your own capabilities and understanding of all related day-to-day site functions, namely in engineering and waste regulation.
As part of the placement, you will be provided with 2 main learning opportunities:
- Undertake and complete a Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) (or similar) in Hazardous Landfill operations
- Complete IOSH Managing Safely course
Placement Objectives
This placement will see you shadowing the Operations Manager help you to develop an understanding of the operation of the site, including day-to-day functions, site engineering and waste regulation.
Role Description
Main Tasks:
- To develop an understanding of the regulatory requirements surrounding the operation of the site, including the site licence, planning restrictions and health & safety
- Gain an understanding to help and assist in the management of day-to-day site operations, including strategic planning, developing action plans and delegation of work activities to site staff, this experience will be developed through workplace shadowing and mentoring from others within the company
- Provide first-class support to the Operations Manager in developing rigorous maintenance schedules for all site plant and equipment, and ensure that these are completed and repairs and maintenance are carried out
- Assist the Operations Manager in developing site procedures in accordance with the company’s management systems
- Develop energy efficiency targets in line with the company’s overall objectives of reducing energy consumption, and execute action plans to achieve these
- Liaise with industry regulators (SEPA, HSE, local authorities) during compliance checks/audits
- Report on progress of site operations to senior management, including at management meetings
Qualifications
HND or degree in an engineering or related discipline would be ideal

- First class IT skills, competent in all MS standard packages
- Competent personal management skills
