For graduate Louise Murdoch, her placement with a Forres company that provides innovative solutions to online booking provided a real boost to her CV. Louise tells that story.
What's your background?
I have not moved very far really! I grew up in Nairn, went to Nairn Academy. Received my honours degree in Graphic Design from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee.
Why did you apply to the graduate placement programme?
I’d taken up a Shell STEP placement programme at Crown Vets, as a marketing executive. It was through that placement I learnt about the TalentScotland (now ScotGrad) Graduate Placement Programme opportunity with e-availability.
How have you benefited from the programme?
I think the main benefit is the chance to be involved in a working environment, as an actual employee. You have the chance to work on live projects, liaise with clients and work within a team, something that's lacking within the comfort of the university environment.
It is a fantastic stepping-stone from university into the working environment. That immediate experience can only benefit you to further your career.
Any advice for other graduates?
Don’t panic! Take the time to consider you options. Programmes like this give graduates a further opportunity they might not be aware of.
It can be difficult trying to find a job that doesn’t have 'at least a year’s experience' in the criteria. Graduates need to look beyond the job seekers’ websites and look into graduate programmes, not just in your area, but also all over the country.
Do as much research as you can into all the organisations that offer placements for graduates.
