New Start Highland
Working for a third sector organisation for the first time, Kerry used her summer placement to gain experience and find out if this working environment would suit her.
What is your background?
I am from Inverness and am currently in my third year of studying for an MA in International Relations and Geography at the University of Aberdeen.
Why did you apply to the Summer Placement Programme?
I applied for a placement with New Start Highland, as I wanted to put into practice the skills that I had gained at university. I am also considering a career in the third sector and thought this would be a great opportunity to gain some new experience.
What project were you involved in?
At New Start Highland I worked as an assistant to the Quality Manager. This involved a variety of tasks including creating a customer feedback system and protecting computer documents, so that the organisation could maintain its quality standard.
What did you like most about your placement?
I really enjoyed my placement with New Start Highland as my colleagues were very friendly and made me feel like part of the team. I also enjoyed trying to find solutions to the challenges the placement created.
What did you learn and what skills have you gained from your placement?
I have never worked within a third sector organisation before so this gave me a degree of responsibility to complete tasks on time and to a certain quality. I have applied this to my studies and this has been a benefit to me.
What advice would you give to other students?
To make the most of any opportunity given to you. This scheme is a great way to gain new skills and work experience, which will benefit you when looking for a job in the future.
