Applying
Too many applications fall down at some very basic hurdles.
Here are some do's and a couple of don'ts.
Make sure you apply well in advance of the closing date. If you have any questions, leave time for them to be answered.
Who's the application going to? Address them appropriately, and spell their name correctly.
Pay sufficient attention to the accuracy and quality of your application, from the spelling to the grammar, to the way it looks. Read it out loud to yourself - does it sound natural? Get someone else to proof-read it.
Lay off pestering the company for feedback immediately. It's ok to enquire about the status of your application if you haven't heard within a fortnight of the closing date.
Be as professional by email as you would if you were communicating by formal letter. There is no place for 'txt spk' in a job application! Or exclamation marks either.
Take feedback graciously. Of course, it's hard taking rejection, but if you see the feedback as experience you can learn from, then you can make your next application a better (and potentially successful) one.
Finally, don't forget, a potential employer may look you up on social media to get a picture of what you and your life are like. Make sure it's a good one.
