Placement summary

Based in central Edinburgh, Streetwise is a specialist pedestrian wayfinding consultancy that operates throughout the UK. We are delighted to be on the lookout for a graduate to join our team, with the aim of getting them started within the next 3 months. The successful candidate will learn the 'wayfinding business' and be involved with analysing towns and cities throughout the UK, so travel to a range of locations and some overnight stays will be involved. You will learn how to compile the subsequent reports for local authorities, which provide recommendations on wayfinding development for an area, together with the associated costs. This is a full-time, 12 month placement - the perfect role for someone who is keen to develop and grow within an interesting environment and who is happy to work away from home, as and when required.

Job description

Project Description

The successful candidate will join the Streetwise team and learn the pedestrian wayfinding business thoroughly. He/she will look at the manner in which the company wins new projects, and the process that then applies from initial scoping of an area right through to installation of wayfinding equipment. They will accompany a Streetwise member of staff when new areas are scoped, and will ultimately learn to undertake this work themselves.

Placement Objectives

To introduce the successful candidate to the pedestrian wayfinding environment and lead to him or her to becoming skilled in analysing town centres for the purposes of wayfinding development. This will include gaining a thorough understanding of the type of equipment now available, and the type of information that can be displayed. They will gain a full understanding of how to use such equipment and associated graphics to route visitors, shoppers, tourists etc. around an area with which they are unfamiliar, so that they get the most from their experience.

Role Description

The role will see a learning period spent shadowing Streetwise staff to learn the fundamentals of the business. Particular emphasis will be spent on the scoping out of towns and cities around the UK which are concerned with analysing current wayfinding provision, and looking at what can be implemented to introduce best practice to an area.

Company information

Streetwise work with local authorities and Business Improvement Districts, providing consultancy and project management services for pedestrian wayfinding systems which are designed to maximise the economic benefits of visitors to an area. These services help visitors, tourists and shoppers find their way around, appreciate the range of attractions and activities available and develop a greater understanding of the destination as a whole.

We approach our work from the standpoint of bringing enhanced economic benefit to an area and, by understanding the factors that affect human behaviour on visiting a new location, we reflect these in our design strategy. Routing visitors, shoppers etc. effectively is in everyone's interests, and we have demonstrable experience of aiding that process, whether through directional, information or interpretive signage.
