Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle (ICCI) on the island of Islay are recruiting for a twelve month development officer post to work in a small team to record and encourage the use of Gaelic in Islay.

Project Description
The project will comprise the recording of Gaelic in Islay dialect coupled with strengthening community support for the use of the language This will be achieved through interviews and conversational opportunities with the native speaking Gaelic community and the active use of Gaelic in social and more formal situations to encourage access to Gaelic for all levels of fluency.
This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate with an interest in Gaelic.
This position is part funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have good communication skills in Gaelic and should possess a Degree / HND or HNC in Scottish Gaelic.
Skills / Experience
Essential Skills
Essential:
- Excellent spoken and written skills in Gaelic
- IT skills, including social media
- Working with community groups in a previous project
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with project volunteers at the appropriate level
- Ability to works as part of a team plus an ability to work productively on individual parts of the larger project
- Ability to self-motivate and work to targets
- Good communication skills both within the work team and with the community at large.
- Flexible approach to the project
Desirable:
- Use of Audacity for sound recording
- Involvement in drama / film / video / blog making
- Driving licence and access to car

Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle (ICCI) is a centre providing year-round classes, courses and activities on Gaelic language and culture on the island of Islay and, more recently, on mainland Argyll. As part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI ) students have been educated to degree standard in Gaelic and in 2007, ICCI piloted the first classes of Ùlpan, the new method of teaching Gaelic, and have trained teachers and other teaching staff to deliver the Gaelic language in this way. ICCI deliver, and have trained teachers and other staff to deliver the ‘Gaelic Language in the Primary School’ course and also help a number of public organisations including SNH, the NHS, Forestry Commission, and Argyll & Bute Council realise their own Gaelic language plans by delivering Gaelic classes for their employees. Moreover, ICCI is an important facility for local Islay people, providing the focus for a range of activities and clubs including training in Gaelic and Gaelic culture, and comprises a community venue, with a variety of rooms for hire, a computer and videoconference suite, Gaelic library, childcare centre and café. Having just completed a comparative research project on Gaelic dialects ICCI is currently expanding its education outreach programme and developing an ambitious cultural heritage business plan.
