Placement summary

Exova are looking for a candidate with a strong chemistry background to join their team of analysts in Edinburgh for a 12 week placement. The candidate will be based at our Edinburgh facility and be involved in the general testing of pharmaceutical grade products for release.

Job description

Project Description

Exova Pharma conduct testing for customers to ensure medicines and pharmaceutical grade products are certificated for use and general purchase. We conduct a variety of testing including following the requirements from customer and product specific methods along with British and European Pharmacopoeal testing for product release.

You will be expected to carry out the following testing after formalised training:

Physical testing of samples including:

  • appearance
  • hardness
  • disintegration
  • dimensions
  • friability analysis.

Perform identity testing including:

  •  UV
  •  FTIR  
  •  Wet chemistry techniques
  •  Dissolution analysis, wet chemistry techniques as per the Pharmacopoeias

 
The placement is intended to allow the candidate to gain experience and a level of expertise in the testing required for pharmaceutical product release into the market place. The candidate will be given an insight into the full drug development process and the role that the analytical testing plays as a part of that process. Training will be delivered to allow the student to be a part of the testing process.

Qualifications

This placement is part of The Scottish Life Sciences Internship Programme. The programme is only open to students in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year, who are studying an undergraduate Life Science Degree in Scotland. Skills / Experience

Essential Skills

  • Basic Chemistry knowledge is essential along with problem solving and calculation skills
  • Utilisation of basic laboratory equipment, pipettes, scientific balances, Bunsen burners

 

Desirable Skills

  • Good data recording and an understanding how to document scientific experiments and write up reports would be of benefit
