Company information
Urras Nan Tursachan is community led, controlled and open to all members of the community. The majority of the management board are individuals from the community and elected by the community. Tursachan Trading Ltd is the trading arm of the Trust and runs the Visitor Centre at Calanais.
Opened in June 1995, the visitor centre contains a gift shop, cafe, toilet facilities and an interpretation centre. The main aim of the interpretation centre is to educate people about the story of the Calanais standing stones. The Visitor Centre has been a great example of a community enterprise which works well over the medium to long term with well over £1million put back into the local economy in wages since it opened and just as important has given numerous local people their first taste of a work environment which has stood them in good stead in future employment. After inheriting the old Callanish farmhouse from Edinburgh University, we have converted it into a self-catering cottage which complements our product on offer to the visitors.
