Placement summary

Based at Fort George near Inverness, the Highlanders’ Museum is one of the largest regimental museums in Scotland, and houses over 50,000 artefacts, documents and photographs. 

Job description

Project Description

The Museum is currently in the process of digitising the whole collection. They are currently seeking a 12-month graduate placement to coordinate the digitisation project and develop a marketing and social media strategy.

Role Description

The successful candidate will coordinate the ongoing digitisation of the collection, alongside developing a longer-term marketing and social media strategy.

Specific tasks of the placement will include:

  • Training on specialist digitisation equipment.
  • Training on the collections management system (Adlib).
  • Digital scanning of collection.
  • Creation and implementation of a digital marketing strategy which includes a social media plan.
  • Assisting with at least several exhibitions/events held to promote the museum’s collection.

Qualifications

Minimum Degree level, preferably related to history, curator studies, culture or heritage. Other subjects accepted provided the candidate has the required skills.

Essential Skills

  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • A good understanding of general marketing principles and digital marketing tools
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work on own initiative.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Good level of IT literacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Current UK driving licence.
  • Commitment to project completion.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of Scottish military history and social history.
  • Knowledge of the heritage sector.
  • Experience of working with volunteers.
  • Some knowledge of the leisure and tourism sector.
  • Project and budget management skills.
