Placement summary

Seaboard Memorial Hall, based near Tain, Ross-shire is recruiting for a graduate for a 12 month research role. The role will involve developing and administering the archiving of material and information, developing of the web-site and assisting with events such as Fisher Folk Festival, Exhibitions and Workshops. The preferred start date for this role is October 2013.

Job description

The Graduate would work alongside the Hall Management Team and lead the gathering of information. The Dualchas – Down to the Sea project objectives are:-

1. Archive, display and make available to the community and the world-wide web the social history of the Seaboard villages of Balintore, Hilton and Shandwick through recorded oral history, folklore, directories, maps, local news articles, photographs, film, poems, songs and music etc.

2. The area has rich heritage in fishing (herring, white and salmon) the project would focus on the impact of the fishing over the years.

3. Workshops based around such things as creel making, rope work, mending nets etc will be held.

4. Exhibition of material gathered and ‘Down Memory Lane’ evenings held so as to gather and glean as much material and information as possible.

The role will require the graduate to assist with the organising of such events, archiving and recording the material along with assisting with the marketing through the building of a web-site / blog and also the actively being involved in the organisation of an annual Fisher Folk Festival.

This position is part funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the European Regional Development Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Qualifications

Any academic discipline accepted.

Skills / Experience

Essential:

  • Strong existing computer skills with Microsoft and general internet and electronic communications
