Placement summary
Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) is Scotland’s national resource of expertise on drugs and drugs issues, headquartered in Glasgow. As part of our work, we provide quality training and information to stakeholders across the drugs and related-fields in Scotland. This 12 month project will identify the most effective means to develop SDF’s e-learning capacity and increase our ability to communicate and train a wider range of people. This is an exciting opportunity to be a key driver of this development and these changes, at a crucial time for the organisation.
Job description
Project Description
Working with SDF and external experts and trainers from the field, you will work to develop online e-learning materials which are attractive and suitable for a range of stakeholders. This includes those who work with people who use drugs in housing, employability and other contexts, to people working within the drugs field finding out more about areas of interest or concern (e.g. ‘legal highs’). Scottish Drugs Forum has approximately 34 full time equivalent staff, and of these, 13 posts involve training as part (or all) of their remit. SDF currently provides over 40 training courses that last between one and four days.
SDF could use e-learning to augment and supplement this training e.g. to prepare people for face-to-face group training, to use as a useful background, or to complement engagement with other SDF activity including:
- A National Quality Development Team undertaking user involvement, consultancy with services and training activity across Scotland
- A Naloxone Team working across Scotland undertaking consultancy and training activity
- A Blood Borne Virus Team undertaking comms, consultancy and user involvement activity across Scotland
- User involvement staff working with volunteers in Ayrshire and Fife
- Employability staff working with groups of trainees in Edinburgh and Glasgow
This project will identify the most effective means to develop SDF’s e-learning capacity and help work this change through the organisation. The project will help develop and deliver a corporate learning and e-learning strategy and action plan for both internal and external stakeholders.
This project involves:
- An audit of what training is currently undertaken, identification of how e-learning may improve or augment the training
- Consultation with staff on their expectations of e-learning, capacity to deliver etc. and a plan to increase this capacity as required
- Consultation with stakeholders on what they want in terms of e-learning – their capacity to participate in e-learning, what they want, and their particular areas of interest
- Consultation with colleagues with specialist knowledge (including trainers) to advise on content, format, and the best means to convey sometimes quite complex messages to target audiences via e-learning
- Building high quality attractive e-learning packages using appropriate software
- Contributing to the marketing of these e-learning products and identifying markets and funders for such content.
Placement Objectives
- To support and oversee capacity-building of SDF e-learning on a day-to-day basis.
- To develop e-learning packages in liaison with experts within the field and make recommendations for longer term development.
- To develop SDF capacity generally to support e-learning.
Role Description
The successful graduate will:
- Develop and publish attractive e-learning packages
- Improve (and encourage / support other staff to improve) understanding of e-learning and its capacity to contribute to SDF’s work
- Help the organisation develop understanding, expertise and, where appropriate, use of e-learning
- Evaluate and respond to feedback and comment from end-users of e-learning packages and other stakeholders
- Contribute to the development of projects and deliver products on time and within agreed budgets
- Contribute to the development and delivery of a new customer relationship management system by liaising with other staff over their information sources and needs
- Acquire and update necessary skills and cascade this learning as appropriate
- Maintain awareness of developments and evolving good practice and highlight / implement action to maintain or improve quality and/or efficiency
- Develop and maintain constructive working relationships with relevant organisations where appropriate
- Contribute to SDF’s communication and internal information management capacities, including the commissioning and implementation of a contact management system
- Carry out any other duties which may reasonably be requested by the Director
Qualifications
Preferably a degree in Creative Industries/Design or IT/Computing, but all degrees will be accepted if candidates have the essential skills required.
