This is an exciting opportunity for a recently qualified chemistry graduate or a graduate with 12 months' post grad experience to demonstrate their knowledge of physical and analytical chemistry and to extend their understanding in these areas. We are offering the chance to be part of an experienced team at the forefront of manufacturing where you will work in a challenging and dynamic environment which will provide an excellent opportunity to put the skills you have learned at University into practice. This is a 12 month placement and is based in Arbroath.

Project Description

The project itself will be laboratory based and will involve working as part of a multidisciplinary team with close interaction with client companies and members of our production teams. The project purpose is to increase the technical expertise within the department and add current thinking and practices to our team. We have an experienced and skilled workforce and you will have the opportunity to work as part of a team in a pro-active and supportive environment. You will be expected to be involved in the design and development of analysis techniques as well as contributing to our plating department analysis.

By the end of the project, the graduate chemist will have been given full training in all the above areas and will be able to:-

  • Perform fault finding analysis and make corrections of plating solution faults.
  • Perform titrations, gravimetric analysis, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, AAS, autotitrations.  
  • Become responsible for chemical stock control for laboratory and plating department as required by the plating supervisor.
  • Contribute to the Health and Safety requirements of the department, including being able to perform Risk and COSHH assessments for laboratory and production processes.
  • Become responsible for the laboratory technicians, including their training requirements
  • Ensure that all daily analysis schedules are adhered to.
  • Ensure that solution analysis and additions are performed to maintain the plating solutions at optimum conditions
  • Fully understand the operation of the effluent treatment facility and be able to control it if required.

Role Description

Main Tasks:

  • Conducting daily analysis of effluent waste streams
  • Conducting daily analysis of plating solutions via titrations
  • Conducting daily analysis of plating solutions via autotitrations
  • Contributing to the development of analytical testing using autotitrator
  • Regular collection of plating solution samples
  • Daily measurement of pH and specific gravity determinations of plating solutions
  • Conducting the daily quality control checks and procedures of the plating baths
  • ​Working with the laboratory technicians to understand their daily analysis schedules and learning the importance of accurate solution analysis
  • Working with the laboratory technicians to learn how additions are performed to maintain the plating solutions at optimum conditions
  • Learning about the operation of the effluent treatment facility, including how the process is controlled, how the operators are trained and learning the importance of discharge limits being maintained within specification
  • Contribute to the development of analysis techniques within the laboratory
  • Contribute to the specification and capital applications of new equipment

Qualifications

Either a newly-graduated Chemist, a graduate Chemist with 12 months' experience or a recently graduated PhD Chemist in analytical, physical or electroplating chemistry.

  • Candidates must have a flair for analytical chemistry and enjoy working in a laboratory environment
  • Candidates will enjoy solving production chemistry problems
  • Candidates must enjoy the challenge of interpreting and analysing complex data
  • Candidates must be communicative, assertive and good at working in a team.
  • Prospective candidates must have the right to work for any company in the UK and have a valid UK driving license.  A current passport would also be required as it is foreseen that some overseas travel will be required.
