Highland Biosciences Ltd, a company that specialises in designing, developing and launching new laboratory equipment that measures the viscosity and density of fluids, is hiring for an Applications Engineer to deliver an up to 12 week project. This role would suit a candidate studying towards an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Project Description
Highland Biosciences offers consultancy services to clients looking to solve challenging technical problems. The objective of this project is to take an initial look at new areas of application and to generate the data used to prove the value of the proposed solution.
The successful candidate will need to keep careful records and have a good understanding of fluids and a strong engineering background to understand the relevence of the data that is produced.
Specific tasks of the placement will include:
1. Orientation with instrumentation (Mid-July)
2. Completion of the operational calibration data sets (End of July)
3. Analysis of the data / preparation of mathmatical models (Mid-August)
4. Preparation of reports (End of August)
This position is part funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.
Placement Objectives
The objective of the placement is to gain experience of being an applications engineer, where the standard company product is validated against a particular purpose and/or customised specific to the customers need.
Role Description
This is a student placement, first and foremost with the emphasis of learning new skills and the opportunity to test those skills in a work place environment. The student is expected to behave in a business-like and professional manner.
Qualifications
Open to all undergraduate degree students who will return to their studies after the summer, preferably those with Mechanical Engineering background. Other degree subjects accepted provided the candidate has the required skills.

As part of this ScotGrad Summer Placement Programme, the candidate will benefit from support from a team within Highlands and Islands Enterprise and also access a two day residential course training focussed on employability and business skills. Please note that we cannot support accommodation costs during the placement but where possible, we will endeavour to assist candidates in sourcing accommodation. Candidates will also be required to attend a finals day in Inverness on Friday 29th August 2014. More information will be given once the successful candidate is appointed.
