Placement summary

Exova are looking for a candidate with a strong chemistry background to join their team of analysts in Hillington for a 3 month placement. The candidate will be based at our Hillington facility and be involved in the testing of soils and waters for contamination.

Project Description

Exova Hillington undertakes a range of soil and water tests to identify and quantify the existence of metals, hydrocarbons, asbestos and other pollutants. We use up to 50 different testing methods which allow the detection of over 1,000 different substances using a variety of instrumentation which includes ICP-MS, ICP-OES, GC-MS and others.

The placement is intended to give the candidate a good working knowledge of how a commercial laboratory operates as well as valuable hands on experience in the use of a number of different instruments.

The candidate will also be assigned an improvement project which will involve being given a brief to undertake a detailed study and produce recommendations for an area of testing. This could be to identify improvements in testing processes or research other technologies which could support the work.

The candidate will take on the role of lab technician which includes samples preparation, testing, quality control and reporting. They will work alongside and actively learn from experience technicians and instrument analysts. This could involve a number of different test methods during the placement for which appropriate training will be given.

Skills / Experience

Essential Skills

Basic Chemistry knowledge is essential along with problem solving and calculation skills. Utilisation of basic laboratory equipment, pipettes and scientific balances is essential.

Desirable Skills

Good data recording and an understanding how to document scientific experiments and write up reports would be of benefit.
