Comunn Eachdraidh Nis, an accredited museum, archive, and exhibition space on the Isle of Lewis, is recruiting for a Retail Development Assistant. This 10 week summer placement project will entail researching local craft producers and artists, developing a supplier database and producing promotional material in both Gaelic and English.

Project Description
Comunn Eachdraidh Nis is developing a new retail area selling local art and crafts as well as local publications. The student will undertake research of local craft producers and artists and create a database of potential suppliers that will be used for the retail development. The student will also contact suppliers and negotiate agreeable terms. In addition, the student will develop marketing material (printed material and content for social media) in both Gaelic and English to promote the local art/crafts/publications available for sale at the shop.
CEN is extremely busy with visitors over the summer months so the student will occasionally also be required to assist existing staff with:
• Meeting and greeting visitors and assisting with enquiries
• Delivering museum tours around the museum
As part of the project the successful candidate will be required to:
• Undertake research of local craft producers and artists
• Create a database of potential suppliers
• Contact local craft producers and artists to compile a list of suppliers for the retail development.
• Negotiate agreeable terms with the suppliers
• Create bilingual marketing material (printed and digital) to promote the new offering
• Assist centre staff with visitor enquiries and delivering museum tours
This position is part funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.
Qualifications
Open to all current HNC, HND and undergraduate degree students who will return to their studies after the summer. All degree subjects accepted provided the candidate has the required skills.

As part of this ScotGrad Gaelic Summer Placement Programme, the candidate will benefit from support from a team within Highlands and Islands Enterprise and also access a two day residential course training focussed on employability and business skills. Please note that we cannot support accommodation costs during the placement but where possible, we will endeavour to assist candidates in sourcing accommodation. All candidates will also be required to attend a presentation day in Inverness. More information and date will be given once the successful candidate is appointed.

Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (CEN) was constituted in 1977 as the first Comunn Eachdraidh in the Western Isles. The society runs a heritage centre and was awarded accreditation standard in December 2010 from the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), acknowledging the high quality of displays and overall standard upheld at the centre.
Since relocating to the former Cross Primary School in 2011, CEN has become a community hub with several community groups using it regularly for meetings and events. The Comunn Eachdraidh hosts a variety of events and exhibitions. CEN host the Ness Day Club where more than 20 housebound and elderly members of the community come together, assisted by volunteers, for lunch and activities based around the CEN archives. The centre holds detailed genealogical records for the north Lewis area as well as a vast archive of information on all aspects of island life. It also has a café which is open all year round.
