Charles River Laboratories
Suzanne has just gone in to her 4th year at Heriot-Watt University, studying Biological Sciences. Her placement gave her great industry insight over the summer.
What is your background?
I’m a 4th year Biological Sciences student at Heriot-Watt University.
What project were you involved in?
My placement appealed to me because I have a keen interest in toxicology, and my placement involved working within a Genetic Toxicology lab. I was involved in the characterisation of 3 cell lines over my time at Charles River Laboratories. I investigated cell cycle times and the modal chromosome number of each of the cell lines.
What were the key benefits of this programme?
I would recommend the programme to other students. The key benefits are gaining laboratory skills and getting an insight into working in the life sciences industry.
How has the placement influenced your return to studies?
I returned to university after my placement feeling confident in my lab skills and enthusiastic to begin my honours project. I’m hoping to begin a postgraduate course next year.
