Andrew McGregor Robertson
For Andrew, a summer placement with HighNet Telecoms has allowed him to work, live and study in his home town!!
Could you tell us a bit about your placement?
HighNet were in the process of implementing and executing the set-up of an updated Customer Record Management (CRM) system. The new system was being built from scratch with no aspects from the current system being transferred over other than customer contact details. My project involved testing all aspects of the new CRM and included creating new business processes in order to make each area fit for purpose. This required a large amount of liaising with relevant departments in the business to fully understand user requirements, as well as relaying any necessary adjustments to the system maintainer.
What have you learnt during your placement?
As part of my placement I have had the opportunity to learn more about servers and learn from experienced members of staff about software procedures that I hadn't encountered before. I have learned how to use and configure software such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft VB and Microsoft Social Enterprise and Office 365 Admin Centre which were all new to me.
Which skills learned at university have helped you in your role?
My placement has allowed me to build on my IT and problem solving skills. I used my problem solving skills to develop workflows; produce product listings; investigate new software and create 'how to' manuals. Logical thinking, programming and investigative skills have also helped me to improve my IT skills.
What advice would you give current students thinking about doing a placement?
My placement has helped immensely with my confidence in the workplace and I would advise anyone who has the opportunity to work on a project through ScotGrad to take it.
What are your plans for the future?
HighNet have offered me a full time position with them whilst also allowing me to continue with my degree. This provides me with a solid foundation in a fantastic workplace and the opportunity to contribute more to the business.
