Law graduate, Ifigenia (Ifi) Temesio, was sure she had her next steps planned out when she undertook a Scotgrad placement to widen her skillset in preparation for becoming a lawyer. However through her placement she discovered a new career path in technology innovation in healthcare.
Originally from Sweden, and having undertaken a degree in Law & Portuguese Language at the University of Glasgow, Ifi Temesio was set on pursuing a career in the legal world. However, she believed it was important to gain knowledge and experience in a different sector in order to become a better lawyer and decided to register with ScotGrad to find a suitable placement.
That led to her starting a ScotGrad placement at Talking Medicines and finding an entirely different career path.
Talking Medicines is a global ‘healthtech’ innovator which creates people-centric digital global healthcare solutions and Ifi explained the importance of their work.
Ifi explained: “I joined Talking Medicines to drive the development of the Medsmart App, a business-to-consumer mobile app that reminds users to take their medicine and keeps a digital log of all their medication on their phones. I was tasked with project managing the app from initial concept through to the wireframe creations as well as the delivery of the finished product to download.
“The process of developing the Medsmart App has been an incredible journey and is very different from the career path I had planned to follow. Being part of creating something and seeing it through from the initial idea to the finished product is an amazing feeling.”
Ifi initially started on a year-long placement but her hard work and dedication has led to her becoming a Product Manager for the Medsmart App at Talking Medicines and she is now focused on further developing the app and rolling it out more widely.
She added: “My placement has taught me so much and it has changed my way of thinking as legal reasoning is very different to the more entrepreneurial and technical reasoning required in Talking Medicines. The skills I have learned have put me on a different career path and I realise I much prefer creating tangible, innovative products and services and no longer wish to pursue a career in law.”
Ifi’s degree gave her an excellent foundation to build on at Talking Medicines, a company which aims to use technology to empower consumers to be more medically aware and therefore able to play a bigger role in their treatment plans.
She explained: “I used my legal reasoning to quickly pick up new skills and adapt to a different way of working. My degree ensured I was able to quickly manage the Medsmart App project and be organised in my approach whilst the planning and time management needed throughout university prepared me for the fast-paced environment of the start-up world.”
A further benefit for Ifi has been the exposure to a real business and the leading industry individuals that she has made connections with.
Commenting on her experience, Ifi said: “I would recommend ScotGrad to students and graduates, I found it a real relief to know I had a secure job for a year after graduating and through my placement I have been able to work on real projects that are important to the business and this in turn helped highlight where my strengths lie.”
