There are many benefits to undertaking a summer internship. You get the chance to gain useful experience, make contacts, and enhance your CV. For some interns, the benefits can even include securing future employment opportunities with their host employer.

Rebecca Harvie, a recent graduate from Glasgow Caledonian University, completed a ScotGrad summer placement last year. After securing her 2:1 degree in Microbiology, she was offered an exciting opportunity...

"In the summer of 2016, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to work with Fixed-Phage for a 10-week internship through the Scottish Life Sciences Internship Programme. The internship helped to confirm that I would be keen to have a career working in a laboratory setting as I enjoyed learning novel skills and carrying out my own experiments. The internship also gave me the amazing opportunity to attend Scotland’s Life Science Awards 2017 in Edinburgh."

Rebecca made sure to keep in contact with her internship host, and kept them updated on the progress of her degree and other achievements.

"After I finished my internship I felt it important to keep in touch with the company due to having a brilliant time whilst I was there. I occasionally visited them throughout the year and maintained contact with the CEO. I now have a permanent job with Fixed-Phage as a laboratory scientist and I feel the internship definitely helped me to secure this role, as well as giving me the lab skills needed to ensure I felt confident when working on my honours project at university. I would highly recommend applying for roles through ScotGrad, as they give you numerous opportunities and it’s great to have on your CV!"

Well done Rebecca - best of luck for your future career.
