As highlighted in a blog earlier this month, Scotland’s energy sector is booming and there are plenty of opportunities for students and graduates looking to take their first step on the career ladder.

Scotland is renowned worldwide for its work in the energy and environmental sectors and this reputation is helping to create a range of exciting opportunities for graduates.

Many of these businesses are small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and ScotGrad has supported a host of placements for students and graduates to learn the ropes inside a growing organisation.

For example, HWEnergy (Highland Wood Energy), based in Fort William is an independent, Scottish owned company with around 45 employees which provides  commercial biomass heating services and CHP solutions across Scotland. They’ve successfully designed and installed 300 complex wood energy projects for clients including farms and rural estates, local authorities, schools, hospitals and hotels.

AES Solar based in Forres is a Solar Energy company with 38 years’ industry experience, servicing Scotland, the UK and international markets with clients as far afield as New Zealand. It specialises in the manufacture, supply and design of solar thermal systems and the supply, design and installation of solar PV systems. The company is involved in innovative solar research projects leading to the design of new technology.

If a career in oil and gas takes your fancy there are a number of Aberdeen based roles to choose from. First up Well-Safe Solutions provides safe and cost-efficient decommissioning of on and offshore oil wells. The well abandonment service allows operators to meet the rules around decommissioning in the safest and most efficient way possible.

Alternatively, Attollo Offshore, manages assets required for late field life, decommissioning rigs, carrying out rig-less well intervention as well as working with onshore wind projects as an offshore marine operator. It joined the London Stock Exchange Group’s (LSEG) international business support and capital raising ecosystem for high growth companies, ELITE, in November 2017 highlighting that it’s a business to watch with exciting prospects ahead.

Lastly, why not look into specialised software business, Adept Solutions, which has been providing the oil and gas industry with the development and support of hydrocarbon accounting systems since 2006.

If you’d prefer to be based in the central-belt, EnviroCentre in Glasgow is an environmental consultancy working in areas such as water management, environmental impact assessments and contaminated lands and ecology providing the perfect opportunity to forge ahead in a career focused on safeguarding the environment.

Staying in the central belt, SAS Environmental Services, based in Livingston, provides oil waste treatment solutions; used around the world by the oil industry and waste management industry. It uses a unique chemical and engineering technology to split oil, water and solids, cleaning up oil contaminated waste and recovering oil.

If this has sparked your interest pursuing a career in the energy or environmental sectors, ScotGrad has a range of opportunities with placements advertised throughout the year.
