ScotGrad Helps Dunns Food and Drinks Recruit Younger Workforce

In the first of a two part case study, we learn how Dunns Food and Drinks, the independent wholesaler, turned to ScotGrad to encourage a younger workforce to join its ranks and support future growth.

Independent wholesaler, Dunns Food and Drinks turned to ScotGrad when they identified a need to recruit a younger workforce to grow the business.

The company, which supplies food and drink to restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs across Scotland, knew it would benefit from fresh thinking in order to grow in key areas of the business.

Managing Director, Jim Rowan, explained: “Dunns Food and Drinks has a long and proud heritage dating back to 1875 when Joseph Dunn first started his soft drinks business in the east end of Glasgow. The company has steadily grown and now employs around 120 staff however, it is important that we remain focused on future growth.”

To support this strategy Dunns recruited graduates Anna Scott, Laura Grady and Hayley Tait through ScotGrad to work in key areas including market analysis and researching upcoming hospitality trends, reviewing the buying process and examining how efficiently the logistics team managed goods and distribution.

Jim, added: “We recognised there was a skills shortage in this sector and wanted to address this potential issue by encouraging young people finishing university to consider career opportunities in the food and drinks wholesale market.

“We knew that ScotGrad would be an effective way of reaching out to this younger workforce and it proved very successful as we received over 200 applications after posting our vacancies on the ScotGrad website. We found three strong candidates, all of whom flourished in their roles.

“Hayley, Laura and Anna are doing a great job and are a real asset to the business. Their fresh perspective has allowed them to analyse the processes in place and suggest ways to work more efficiently and effectively while bringing a new way of thinking to the business.”

Dunns places a strong emphasis on training which was key to the development of the graduates.

Jim, explained: “We put our graduates through a comprehensive induction and training progamme as well as scheduling regular meetings and one-to-ones to check on their progress. Recent graduates come into the business without any preconceived notions and they are keen to learn and benefit from different training opportunities.  As a result, all three ScotGrads are making a noticeable impact with positive changes to our culture.

“Thanks to our great experience so far, we intend to take on further graduates through ScotGrad as we feel it is an effective way to bring in new skills and fresh ideas in a competitive sector.”
