Strathspey Railway Company
The Strathspey Railway Company took on Marketing Masters graduate Deborah Quinn for a year’s placement. She soon got them up to speed on some powerful marketing initiatives, as Strathspey’s Gill Kelly explains.
What’s your company’s background?
We manage and run a heritage railway as a tourist attraction on the Strathspey Railway line through the Cairngorms National Park. Established in 1971, the railway began to operate steam trains over 5 miles of the original Highland Railway Line from Aviemore to Boat of Garten in 1978. Today, trains run into the magnificently restored Victorian station in central Aviemore. An additional 4 miles from Boat of Garten to Broomhill were re-opened in 2002.
Why take on a graduate?
We felt we needed to improve our customer targeting to raise the profile of the SRC and identify any gaps in our marketing processes that needed sorting.
What has the graduate been involved with?
Deborah assisted in specific customer targeting, raising our public profile and identifying gaps the marketing processes. Deborah’s role also entailed raising the profile of the website and utilising social media channels. After the completion of her placement, Deborah was offered an extension, which she happily accepted.
What’s been the most powerful benefit?
The Railway has benefited from employing Deborah with her great knowledge of marketing, and modern ideas such as getting us into the social media world; increasing passenger footfall through these mediums. She has certainly earned our respect and we are more than pleased to have her join our full time team, and look forward to helping put her ideas into action.
What knowledge and skills has the graduate brought to your organization?
Very much the marketing skills and knowledge of websites, and social media, that have all given our programmes added impetus.
