We wish to employ a talented Life Sciences Graduate to assist us in the development of molecular profiling methodologies for understanding the effects of drugs and chemicals on both in vitro cell model systems and clinical samples.
MicroMatrices use molecular profiling technologies to unlock the biological information contained within tissue samples. As a contract research organisation (CRO), we provide analytic services to the drug/chemical and agrichemical industries for mechanistic/toxicology (safety) studies and drug/chemical candidate selection (efficacy).
Within this project, we will be extending our current capabilities in this area to include clinical samples to assess the potential of our profiling technologies for medical diagnostics. In the short term, we will characterise the genotypic and phenotypic profiles of a human tumour sample to look for commonality between the profiles of this cancer and other more common ones. In the longer term, we would like to assess if molecular profiling an individual patient’s tumour will generate information that will support more informed clinical decisions for the patient.
To understand and apply a range of tools/technologies for molecular profiling of tissues and to analyse, interpret and report your findings.
You will learn how to use a range of molecular profiling technologies to investigate biological endpoints. As part of this process, you will assist in the preparation of spheroid tissue microarrays (see www.spheromatrices.com), run expression microarrays and perform immunohistochemistry. Your work may also include the use of genomics and proteomics methods and bioinformatics for identifying biomarkers.
You will have responsibility for carefully documenting all investigations and results in project lab books. If these investigations form part of a commercial contract, you will produce reports on these activities for our clients. You will also assist in the delivery of other MicroMatrices contract services as required.
Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences.
Skills / Experience
Biological laboratory experience; good understanding of mammalian cell biology; excellent technical skills; meticulous attention to detail; ability to adapt to changing priorities, as well as versatility and flexibility in your approach to problem solving. As the preparation of formal reports for clients is a key responsibility, you must demonstrate excellent written English skills.
Experience with histological techniques and microscopy; familiarity with or interest in bioinformatics.
You will have the opportunity to develop new scientific experience as well as gain industrial experience by participating in science-led projects within a focused, dynamic company serving multinational pharmaceutical and agrochemical clients. We regularly publish our work so there may be an opportunity to co-author papers/posters while with the company. We are located close to the campus and facilities of the University of Dundee and Dundee; free parking.
