Dundee based MicroMatrices Associates have an excellent 12 month placement opportunity for a talented Life Sciences Graduate to get involved in a project which is aimed at the development of methodologies for testing drugs and chemicals using 3D cell cultures.

Project Description

MicroMatrices has developed a technology for making tissue microarrays with cell spheroids which can then be tested for a range of molecular endpoints which indicate biological responses to drug/chemical treatments.

3D cell cultures are being developed as an alternative to 2D cell culture systems for testing drugs and chemicals as cells grown in 3D, often as spheroids, behave more like cells do in vivo.

This project is essential to help us extend our current capabilities in this area with the focus on realising commercial potential.

Placement Objectives

To provide us with graduate-level support to assist in the scientific and commercial development of prototype testing services for the MicroMatrices’ proprietary spheroid array system.

Role Description

You will assist in producing the spheroid arrays with different cell types and learn how to use immunohistochemistry tests to investigate  biological endpoints. The investigations with the spheroids may also include a the use of proteomics methods for identifying biomarkers.

In addition, you will have responsibility for carefully documenting all investigations and results in project lab books. If these investigations form part of a commercial contract, you will produce reports on these activities for our clients. You will also assist in the delivery of other MicroMatrices contract services/activities as required.


You will ideally have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in Life Sciences related discipline.

Skills / Experience

Essential Skills

  • Biological laboratory experience
  • Good understanding of mammalian cell biology
  • Excellent technical skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, as well as versatility and flexibility in your approach to problem solving
  • As the preparation of formal reports for clients is a key responsibility, you must demonstrate excellent written English skills

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with histological techniques and microscopy
  • Familiarity with or interest in marketing/customer relations
