Placement summary

Eurofins are looking for a candidate with a strong chemistry background to join their team of analysts in Edinburgh for a 3-month placement. The candidate will be based at the Livingston facility and be involved in the general testing of pharmaceutical grade products for release.

The placement is intended to allow the candidate to gain experience in a pharmaceutical quality control setting and a level of expertise in the techniques required for pharmaceutical product release into the market place.

Project Description

The candidate will be expected to carry out the following testing after formalised training:
Physical testing of samples including:

  • Appearance
  • Dimensions
  • Disintegration
  • Hardness
  • Friability

Identity testing of samples including:

  • UV-Vis spectrophotometry
  • FTIR
  • Wet chemistry techniques

Dissolution analysis and additional wet chemistry techniques as per pharmacopoeia monographs.

Placement Objectives

The candidate will be given an insight into the full drug development process and the role that analytical testing plays in that process. Training will be delivered to allow the candidate to actively participate in testing procedures.

Skills / Experience

Essential Skills

  • Basic Chemistry knowledge
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good problem solving and calculation skills
  • Utilisation of basic laboratory equipment; pipettes, analytical balances, Bunsen burners etc.

Desirable Skills

  • Good data recording and an understanding of how to document scientific experiments and write up reports
