Placement summary

Devro Ltd. are suppliers of collagen casings for foods, used in the production of a wide variety of sausages and other food products. The Analytical Services Laboratory within our Moodiesburn plant, near Glasgow requires a laboratory technician to develop a HPLC method to separate preservatives.

Job description

Project Description

The successful candidate will develop a robust method as described above and:

  • Must be able to work independently and safely within the H&S guidelines of the company
  • Carry out all necessary COSHH and Risk Assessments before commencing the task
  • Be able to work independently with minimum supervision although full guidance and instruction will be available at all times

Placement Objectives

The project will involve developing a HPLC method to primarily separate Sorbate and Benzoate within the one matrix. Potassium Sorbate/Sorbic Acid and Sodium Benzoate/Benzoic Acid are preservatives used in the food industry. In some countries either or both are not permitted therefore we have to ensure that we are aware of the preservatives present or absent in our raw materials. Currently, the methodology in use can detect the presence of preservatives but we are unable to separate, therefore identify the individual parameters.
